PORTUGAL MODERN

The Instituto de Engenharia Electrónica e Telemática de Aveiro (IEETA) stands as a testament to architectural precision and thoughtful design, meticulously aligned with the four cardinal points. This structure is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, rooted in the University of Aveiro’s original urban plan. Architect Bernardo Ferrão crafted an elongated design to preserve the breathtaking views of the nearby lagoon, allowing the building to rise gracefully from the roadways leading to its western facade.

The building’s dense structure is a marvel of symmetry, featuring three storeys and three distinct sections. The first section, a glass-enclosed hall, is strategically positioned on a high point of the gentle slope, giving it a two-storey appearance. This section serves as a welcoming gateway, inviting visitors into the heart of the institute.

The second section is the core of the building, housing essential facilities such as offices on the south side and laboratories on the north. This layout is thoughtfully arranged along a corridor that mirrors the building’s east/west symmetry. The entrance on the first floor, along with the elevator and rest areas on each level, establishes a perpendicular axis of symmetry, with equidistant staircases enhancing the building’s balanced design.

The third section, an auditorium perched above a bar, is a striking feature with its extensive use of glass, offering panoramic views of the lagoon. This section not only serves as a functional space but also as a visual highlight, embodying the building’s connection to its natural surroundings.

Overall, the IEETA building is a masterful composition that adheres to classical architectural principles while seamlessly integrating with its environment, fulfilling both the programmatic needs and the aesthetic aspirations of its design.
